Visiting ringers

Visiting ringers

Visiting bird ringers from Sussex and Kent helped us to another impressive total of 448 birds ringed yesterday. Strong SE winds this morning limited us to operating just one sheltered site where an easy going pace, a lot of banter and a foray for some to collect breakfast baps from the local burger van accompanied 60 more birds ringed. Visual migration included our first autumn influx of Starlings along with flocks of Chaffinches in off the sea, Siskins and also Skylarks. This afternoon two Black Redstarts adorned the garden walls of Mannez lighthouse and a Yellow Wagtail was at the airfield.

Cattle Egret

Cattle Egret

Collected a couple of visiting ringers from the airport this afternoon and we picked up an adult Yellow-legged Gull on route to their accommodation. Late afternoon our first Cattle Egret of the year was found at Kiln Farm fields.

Barn Swallow

Barn Swallow

This morning the Long-eared Owl found yesterday was still present in the census area. A long day in the field yesterday took some totting up as 603 birds were ringed, this figure just shy of our highest total in one day. Highlights were our first ever October record of Wryneck, 7 White Wagtails, 4 Firecrests and a rather interesting pale grey ‘ form’ of Barn Swallow.

Another busy morning!

Another busy morning saw 165 birds ringed including Grasshopper Warbler, 3 Firecrests and a Grey Wagtail. A Marsh Harrier prospected along the north-east coast this afternoon and a Common Redstart was present close to the Longis ‘Naturetrek’ hide.

Visual migration is progressing, yesterday our first Skylarks and Siskins of the autumn were coming through along with small flocks of Chaffinches.

Late afternoon today in the howling gales a large gathering of seabirds fishing off Mannez lighthouse included around 60 Arctic Terns and a juvenile Sabine’s Gull.
