Bird Observatories are not just about birds… Our latest species that appears to be the first ever recorded in Alderney is a parasitic wasp – Icheneuman sarcitorius.

“Garden friendly” bird talk

“Garden friendly” bird talk

Great turnout this afternoon ( around 40 people) at the Paris residence for ABO Bird Warden John Horton’s talk about how to attract birds to your garden.

Thanks to everyone who attended and for your generous donations to the ABO. The tea and cakes were rather good too!

Cryptocephalus vittatus

Cryptocephalus vittatus

This morning Matt & I took out a private tour group from the UK. Amongst an impressive variety of everything the runs-crawls slithers- burrows- fly’s and swims that we found was a striking little beetle that we have never seen before that goes by the Latin name only of Cryptocephalus vittatus.

It appears this species is not found on mainland UK and is very rare in the Bailiwick Islands, the two we discovered look to be the first record in Alderney since 1897, and only the 2nd time the species has ever been recorded here. Image (JH)
