Common Tern 5 May 2021

For the bird observatory, Spring is not truly here until we see the start of the return of our Common Tern colony. This morning half a dozen of these wonderful ‘Swallows of the sea’ are fishing off our NE coast in the vicinity of the traditional nesting sites. photo (JH) taken this lunchtime of one of the freshly arrived Terns.

Quite a morning for us with the Great Bustard located by our migration assistant Ian at the exact same time as Assistant Warden Matt caught the first Common Crossbill ever ringed on Alderney. Photo of the Crossbill by John Horton.

Great Bustard 2 May 2021

We don’t come across many of these during our daily census walk! Whilst counting and recording everything from Wrens to Herring Gulls this morning Ian Le Page found this Great Bustard at Fort Albert.

Photo ( back of camera) JH. Ian has some great images that we’ll share here this evening.

Corncrake?

Exciting news just emerging of a possible Corncrake at the Community woodland seen by an AWT staff member yesterday, unfortunately the news was not put out/shared, but if the description makes it past the Bailiwick Rare birds panel it will be the first record for Alderney since the 1970’s! Well done to the finder!!
