Common Redstart

Common Redstart

A Great Egret was latest new species addition to our 2022 census this morning but the star bird was a Common Redstart wearing a UK ringing scheme ring, details to come but possibly one from the small breeding population in the UK returning to his breeding grounds.

More variety of migrants this week included our first Green Sandpiper and Short eared Owl of the spring. This morning’s census produced 5 Ring Ouzels, a singing Nightingale and two Honey Buzzards headed NE. Amongst 80 passerines ringed were Redstart and Tree Pipit.

Ring Ouzels

Ring Ouzels

This spring has been somewhat of a slow burn thus far but a flock of 5 Ring Ouzels feeding together close to the lighthouse this afternoon was a fine sight indeed. This red-listed species is considered to have suffered a 43% decline in its population over the last 40 years.

Starling record

Starling record

Had to share this wonderful record just received from the Polish ringing scheme, returned to The Channel Islands Bird Ringing Scheme by some diligent researcher checking historical records and discovering an unfulfilled data request, perhaps one of Europe’s oldest passerine ‘Control’ records.

See attached ringed as a chick in Poland in 1936 and recovered in Guernsey 1938!
