Ring Ouzel

Ring Ouzel

Fewer grounded migrants this morning, the highlight was our first Ring Ouzel of the year ringed and photographed by Matt Scragg.

Redstart

Redstart

Brief views of a Hoopoe this morning followed our first Common Whitethroat, Tree Pipit and Common Redstart of the year, all ringed in the census area. Photos: this morning’s adult male Redstart

Hooded Crow

Hooded Crow

A Hooded Crow first seen briefly during the morning census was relocated this afternoon, a local rarity, this is only the 6th island record (4 of the previous 6 records since 2017). A trickle of spring migrants included 3 Wheatears and a Swallow reported by David Child.

Large Tortoiseshell Butterfly

Large Tortoiseshell Butterfly

The last two mornings have both seen fair falls of Chiffchaffs and over 150 have been ringed along with a UK ringed Chiffchaff and our first Willow Warbler of the year yesterday.
A pleasant but all too brief surprise during net rounds today was a rare Large Tortoiseshell butterfly that I managed a quick mobile phone photo of at Essex Farm.
