A member of the public reported a Hoopoe this morning feeding in a back garden in the vicinity of La Trigale. Though the finder needed no help with identifying the bird it is always helpful for the Alderney Island Bird Recorder to receive photos which negate the need for completing written descriptions of rare birds. Even if the image isn’t as clear as you would like, we can usually identify the species for you. So, watch out for this exotic looking pink, black and white bird in your garden, it’s out there somewhere!
Today’s highlight a White Stork first seen this morning by Paul Veron over the airport then at various locations around the island. Also today a Green Sandpiper and just a single Swallow.
Spring migration update: the last few days have seen expected but no less eagerly anticipated migrants passing through the island including Sand Martins, Swallow, Wheatears and the first Puffin of 2024.
Nothing fancy but delighted to be able to report the first light flurries of Chiffchaffs this morning and yesterday which included 52 ringed along with half a dozen Firecrests.
