The return of the Gannets is heralded in Alderney each year but this effectively refers to the first breeding birds landing on one of the colony breeding sites. Gannets can be fairly easily spotted offshore from Alderney year round. The ringing of Gannets here since 1947 has evidenced individual birds travelling as far as the north west coast of Africa and the Middle East outside of the birds breeding season. We have recorded small numbers daily so far this year but today signs of increased activity was evident with at least 60 Gannets fishing off Mannez lighthouse this morning.
