August 12th

Better conditions this morning saw migrant birds again finding our nets and 60 birds in total processed. We had 2 first year Pied Flycatchers, a male and a female, along with another Garden Warbler and continued passage of Willow Warblers. See ringing totals page for full list.

An opportunity to compare 1st year Pied Flycatchers caught on the same net round was presented this morning. The other 1st yr Pied Flycatcher we ringed this week showed dark chocolate-brown tail feathers identifying it as a female. Today we were able to compare a 1st yr female with the darker/black central tail feathers of a first year male. See photo. (Male on the right).
